Leaf Pick Up

Weekly leaf pickup begins Monday, October 6th and continues for seven (7) weeks through to the week of November 17, 2025.  Leaves must be debris-free and to the curb by 6:00 a.m. on Monday of each week.

Cemetery Clean Up
All arrangements at the cemetery will need to be removed prior to October 13, 2025, to allow for fall clean-up.  New arrangements may be placed on October 18, 2025.

Holiday Garbage & Recycling Schedule
Mount Vernon’s refuse collection is managed by Republic Services.   View their holiday schedule, below or contact them directly at (563) 332-0050.

As with any technology, it may take time to adjust the necessary functions of the system. We are actively monitoring the lighting levels and banner brightness to ensure they are appropriately adjusted. Your patience is appreciated as we fine-tune these systems to best serve the community.

The banners are intended to support official City communications, including public service announcements, emergency alerts, community events, and other city-related information and are not available for personal messages, private event announcements, or commercial advertising. This policy ensures that the messaging remains clear, consistent, and focused on serving the public interest.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. to make recommendations to the City Council on various land development issues.  This includes revisions to the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, requests for rezoning of land, approval of site development plans, annexation and subdivision applications.

Welcome to the new Mount Vernon City employees hired since Jan. 1, 2026- Camden Leonard in Public Works, and David Frankfurt, Monet Roelle, Nick Macke and Morgan Kelley as new officers with the Police Department.

Aug. 15        Breakfast with the Mayor at First Street Breakfast Club-9:30 AM. The opening question will be-“what does/should economic development look like in Mount Vernon?

Aug. 19         Cornell new students arrive on campus

Sept. 8           Dog swim at the Mount Vernon City Pool

Citizens can put in a work order that needs the attention of City staff? Visit the City website-cityofmountvernon-ia.gov, Request for Action, complete and hit Submit. In the second quarter, 52 work orders were written up between internal and citizen requests with almost all completed in the quarter as well.
